Synthetic Sex Hormones in Canned Foods? Not Sexy.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is used to make the polycarbonate plastic we find everywhere - from sports equipment to DVD's, CD's, reusable drink and food containers (which we are avoiding too, right?).It is also used in the lining of canned foods sold off of store shelves every day.In addition, BPA is used as a synthetic sex hormone.In the May 18, 2010 report Senator Feinstein, others demand BPA ban in Food Safety Bill, the first paragraph includes this statement:"BPA is a synthetic sex hormone and exposure to low doses has been linked to abnormal behavior, diabetes and heart disease, infertility, developmental and reproductive harm, and obesity, which raises the risk of early puberty, a known risk factor for breast cancer."Canned foods were tested in independent laboratories.  Included in the testing were varied name brand canned vegetables, soups, sodas, milk products, beans, fish and fruits.   Cans tested were from both store purchases and actual home participant pantries.BPA toxins are not welcome at the dining table, but canned foods provide countless affordable, realistic and easy meal options for many families.

FACT:

One can of green beans tested showed a BPA level at 1,140 parts per billion - the highest level of BPA ever found in a canned food.
